Film Title:
The Honest Courtesan

aka Dangerous Beauty

aka A Destiny of Her Own

Year:
1998
Director:
Marshall Hersovitz
Actors:
Rufus Sewell, Catherine McCormack, Oliver Platt, Naomi Watts, Jacqueline Bisset
Plot:
Pure Romance.  Poetry-writing Venetian floozy wins her nobleman in the end.
Review:
Shirts with floppy-sleeves, tight corsets, spilt red wine, rumpled sheets, Rufus in a wet shirt... what more do you want?  There's plenty of on-screen chemistry, and the plot moves along like a steam train, finally pulling in at the Station Happy Ending with a huge triumphant blast of steam and a massive whistle.  Look out for 101 faces you know.  Also, a Top Cheese Nomination for the scene where Jacqueline Bisset demonstrates the workings of a naked boy's whatsit.  (Hysterical!)  I think there's even a lap dog in the film somewhere.  Extra points for a great (almost pure Cheddar) script and glorious scenery.   If this doesn't make you want to pack up your petticoats and head for Venice, you're dead in the romance department.  Why was there never a sequel?
Stars:
Five.
Purchase:
They ought to give away free ripped bodices with this one...
